Summer Morning Routine

I’ve spent a lot of time perfecting my morning routine over the past few years. If you haven't read my How To Create Your Own Morning Routine" post, then go read that and come back.

I really love a slow morning (if possible), even if that means getting up earlier than my children. I’m not naturally a morning person, so I need a solid hour to prepare myself for the day ahead. Summertime is a little different for me since I’m not homeschooling while school is out. The mornings are a lot less chaotic, which is a nice change of pace. This morning routine still works throughout the year, but it does look a bit more fast-paced when school begins in the fall. I hope this inspires you to create a morning routine that you love. It doesn't have to be fancy or fifteen steps. Create a morning routine that works best for you and helps you feel ready for your day.

summer morning routine coffee at the kitchen window
Morning coffee at my kitchen window. There is always something beautiful to behold out this window.

I’d love to say I make my bed first or exercise gratitude (and sometimes it gets done upon waking), but most days I am headed straight to the coffee pot while pulling a sweatshirt over my head because I am cold and cranky. I make my morning pot of coffee by grinding my coffee beans. Now my current favorite coffee is Stumptown Roasters. Their Coffee beans and pre-ground coffee are divine. It tastes exactly like coffee shop coffee. I enjoy a dark roast because I love the coffee taste. I will never drink a light roast... You can have that coffee-flavored water.

Upon pouring my first warm cup of coffee in my favorite mug, I finally get some liquid energy and pull out my Bible. Now I wake up grateful to Jesus for another day, but it takes a little coffee to get my brain functioning enough to even comprehend my existence. I love to sit on my living room couch near the window and watch the birds while I read my bible.

I am currently reading through the Bible one book at a time. I am severely behind in said bible reading plan, but that’s okay. I’m focusing on slowly reading and growing in my knowledge of God.

summer morning routine coffee and devotions
Morning devotions are always better on the front porch before the day begins!

I do try to eat a good protein-rich breakfast most days after my coffee, while feeding my kids their breakfast. Yes, coffee on an empty stomach isn’t super wise, but I don’t always wake up hungry. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, despite not waking up hungry.

Next on my morning agenda, I typically make my bed, brush my teeth (after coffee so it doesn't stain my teeth), and then put on my workout clothes. I will head to my barre class at the gym or go for a morning walk in the sunshine. I am at the stage where daily movement is a non-negotiable part of my day. Movement in the morning seems to be what my body likes best, so if possible, I try to get my workouts in during the morning hours. Barre has been a perfect exercise for me, which my hormones seem to really love. It is even better because I go with friends and they keep me accountable.

Pre-barre class starting... because I am in no shape afterwards to take a photo!

When I leave Barre, I typically go straight home to peel my clothes off my sweaty and exhausted body. If I have to run an errand, I will, but I prefer going home to change first. I will also get dressed, do my morning skincare, and sometimes makeup, depending on what I feel like. During the summer months, we frequent the pool, splash pads, parks, and spend a lot of time with friends. I try to squeeze those playdates in during the morning hours because otherwise these Tennessee summer temps will get you.

For the remainder of my morning, I do a never-ending cycle of cleaning, cooking, working for my day job, and trying to squeeze in some time to write and post here on my website and socials. Oh, and all while trying to keep my kids entertained and thriving.

That is a typical summer morning routine for me! What is your morning routine? I would love to hear from you!
