It’s almost Summer Break and we couldn’t be more thrilled! 🥳 Throughout the summer, I like to keep my kids' little growing brains busy and engaged so they don’t forget all the things they learned during the school year. You don’t have to assign book work or projects to keep them engaged and learning, either. You can easily make it fun! 🤩
So here are a few tips for keeping kids engaged with learning during the summer, I like to do during summer break to keep them sharp on their skills:
✏️ 20-30 minutes of daily reading a book of choice. We will also visit the library a lot throughout the summer. It is the perfect place to cool off during a heat wave. I will take my computer to write and catch up on work, and the kids will read and color-a win for everyone!
✏️ More outdoor play than indoor play. Kids (and adults) need lots of fresh air and sunshine. It makes a huge difference in their day and attitude when you start the day outside, and it is so good for their brain.
✏️ Listening to educational podcasts when driving and when doing things around the house, like daily chores. We LOVE The Real Cool History for Kids podcast. Incorporate a podcast or audiobook that gets them thinking, even if you’re just playing it while spending a day at home.
✏️ Open-ended play basket- provide art supplies, Legos, Lincoln Logs, puzzles, etc, all in one place that they can access all summer long.
✏️ Play math-focused games that are fun and easy to incorporate into your day! Amazon has tons of great hands-on math games that you can play with your kids.
✏️ Make learning fun as you enjoy things locally as a family and as you vacation. Create a scavenger hunt for your beach trip, do a tour of local splash pads, visit museums that are local to you, etc. Take these opportunities to discuss how water treatment works (splash pads), the wildlife found at the beach thanks to God’s perfect creation (beach trip), and the importance and different types of art (local museums).
Praying you have a restful, fun, and educational summer break!
And Congrats!! We made it through another school year, homeschool moms! Proud of your hard work and cheering you on!
