Welcome to my article series on faith-based homeschooling! I am so glad you're here! Let's jump right in!
I remember when I first began my homeschooling journey with my oldest child. We signed her up for an online homeschool Christian academy, purchased all the materials she needed, hung colorful laminated educational posters on the walls, and even set up a small desk in her room. Did I mention that I was incredibly nervous and had no clue how to homeschool a child? Nonetheless, we started the school year, marking the first day of our homeschool journey. A few years later, we added another classmate, our son, and we’ve been successfully homeschooling for six years now. For the first few years of my homeschooling journey, I wasn’t really clear on why I was doing it. I knew I wanted my kids to have a great education, but I severely doubted my ability to teach them. My education was built solely in the public school system, so I had no other perspective to glean from, minus my husband’s experience of being homeschooled. Perhaps you’re worrying over that very same question: Do I have what it takes to homeschool my child? In short, yes, you do have what it takes. Let’s dig deeper into this question.
You see, I felt a lot like Moses when I started my homeschool journey. I doubted myself, I doubted God’s calling in my life, and I grumbled a lot, just like the Israelites as they wandered in the wilderness for forty years. I hadn’t yet realized the gift and huge responsibility that homeschooling was at that time. If you’re here too, I understand your hesitation. Do you remember what God said to Moses when Moses gave his laundry list of reasons why he was not qualified to lead God’s people? God told Moses that He would be with him and give him the words to speak to the Israelites. The truth of the matter is, even on our best day, it is God who gives us the wisdom and strength to homeschool our children.
Our ability to parent and teach our children comes from God as He leads our families. So, no, you don’t have what it takes to teach your children in your own strength, but God does have what it takes to lead you. What you must remember is that every homeschooling journey is unique, and that is kind of the whole point. Your family will create a routine that fits your lifestyle and needs. This is a beautiful thing, so don’t get hung up on what it “should” look like. You just have to jump right in.
The Heart of it: As you homeschool your children, may your faith grow exponentially as you watch Him equip you to teach your children about Him and the world around them. This journey will be full of mountaintops and valleys, but mainly it will be precious moments that you treasure forever.
“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.” Deuteronomy 11:18-21 ESV
