Why You Should Create A Fall Syllabus

We started our seventh year of homeschooling yesterday. Although it took a few years to get into a good homeschooling groove, I am glad to report that it has been the best decision for our family. I love spending my days with my children. Throughout this journey of teaching my children to love learning, I have also fallen in love with learning-for the first time in my life. I am nearing thirty-one years old, and I repeat, I am just now learning to love learning. It has been an exhilarating journey so far, and I am just getting started!

After putting together my children’s curriculum and then writing a little of my own (which you can find here if you’re interested), I decided to create a fall syllabus for myself. Now you’ve likely seen the “personal curriculum” videos circulating on Instagram, or you’ve scrolled Pinterest and come across the “create your own syllabus” pins. I found both equally inspiring and decided to try it myself. I am focusing on a seasonal syllabus during this season of my life, as time is limited during the school year.

Fall is approaching, despite the almost unbearable temperatures here in East Tennessee. Here is what I am focusing on learning this fall. I have three main lists on my syllabus, or would it be syllabi? Nonetheless, I am starting with just a few items on my list, but hope to add more as the season progresses and time allows.

• Pride & Prejudice (already finished this one). I rate it a 5/5 stars, obviously. It is a classic, but truthfully I had only seen the movie before reading the novel.

• How To Be A Hepburn In A Kardashian World

• The Case for Christ

• The Richest Man In Babylon

  • If time allows, I will add on: Jane Eyre, 1984, & The Count of Monte Cristo (sticking to the classics for the fall)

• The Puritan Way of Life

• Regency Era in British History

• A Deep Dive into Gossip via the Bible

Hands-On Learning/Courses

• Learn how to make sourdough bread

• Learn the fundamentals of tennis and get good at it (currently taking tennis clinics)

• Visit an apple orchard

• Go to a live musical performance

• Visit a new city + explore
