My Honest Review Of The Oura Ring

I've had my Oura Ring for two and a half months now, and I am going to share my full review of this ring. I originally saw the ring because of the notorious Instagram ads that always clutter up my newsfeed. In this case, I am happy I succumbed to the ads and bought the ring. After a little E.R. trip in February, I wanted something to wear to bed that would continually monitor my heart rate. But I am getting ahead of myself, so let me explain what happened.

I took a little trip to the E.R. back in February for some heart palpitations that made me feel like I was going to faint. That random night after dinner and the long E.R. visit then landed me three office visits with a Cardiologist, a 30-day continuous heart monitor, an Echocardiogram, and then finally a diagnosis just a week ago, that resulted in taking a new medication for said heart issue. Basically, in plain English, I have Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia, which is fancy for my heart's electrical system runs high, and my average heart rate is in the 90s. Apparently, this is not something you can just ignore, although I tried because I really hate taking medicine. However, I am doing whatever it takes to take care of myself.

Back to the Oura Ring.

Now, the Oura Ring isn't a medical device, nor does it claim to be. It is fairly accurate with the heart rate, just as the Apple Watch is. I do have a medical-grade finger sensor that will also take my heart rate and Blood Oxygen level, so I will report back after I do an experiment comparing the Apple Watch, Oura Ring, and Finger Monitor. I simply didn't want to wear my Apple Watch to bed, and really liked the ring idea, so I bought one. I have been so impressed by it. I am the geek who gets giddy when I wake up in the morning and check my "scores" for the day. I really love that. Here are all the pros of the ring:

  1. The Readiness Score-Every day, it gives me a readiness score based on my sleep, recovery, heart rate, body temperature, etc. There are several different areas they pull data from to get the score.

  2. My sleep score- I have also been really honing in on a steady sleep schedule for my heart's sake and my stress levels. The Oura Ring reminds me when it is time for bed, which I really like. It also shows me my heart rate throughout the night and breaks down all the hours of my sleep. It will tell you the number of hours you were in REM sleep, light sleep, deep sleep, and how long I was in bed awake. If you take a nap, it gives you bonus points. ;) The detailed data is so cool.

  3. Activity Score- I am a really active person. You can log your workouts on the Oura Ring app, and often it will pick up what I am doing without even logging it. One day, I went hiking, and it said "Maybe: Hiking," and all you have to do is click "accept," and it adds the activity to your timeline. There are tons of options to choose from so you can manually select the activity you're doing or add in your own.

  4. The Cycle Tracking Feature- I have my Oura Ring synced to my period tracker app, but you can solely use the Oura Ring to track your cycles. I have PCOS, and I am always keeping up with my cycles to make sure I am taking care of myself the best I can. Often with PCOS, you have irregular cycles, so I love keeping a detailed record of my period cycles to be able to refer to when I go to the doctor to get my hormone levels checked and/or my yearly Gynecologist visit.

  5. Stress Levels-I have been actively trying to minimize my stress for a while now. The Oura Ring gives you a detailed line graph every day with your stress levels graphed on it. It is so wild to see the different times of day when your stress was highest or lowest. I have been shocked by the hours of stress I rack up most days. I am really working on this. It also gives you helpful tips on how to minimize stress via the "Oura Advisor," which is kind of like a built-in AI feature.

  6. The ring charge is great. It stays charged for several days at a time, and when it is time to charge, it alerts you. The full charge doesn't take long at all.

  7. There are even features that track your resilience to stress, your cardiovascular age, and more. I believe they are coming out with a food section where you can track your food, but this isn't available on my ring yet. Lastly, you can share your data with your healthcare professional, which is pretty cool.

All in all, I love this ring. I truly don't have any cons about it. The only thing that caught me off guard was that it glows green in bed at night as it measures my heart rate, and then glows bright red when it tracks my blood oxygen level. I don't notice it unless it is dark, of course. I call it my Darth Vader ring at night and my magic ring by day, which my kids cackle at.

A true 10/10 stars. Get you one!
